My Mortar and Pestle

I wanted to try something different today, so for this blog post I bring you….

My first video!

On which I share with you one of my favourite kitchen tools (I can just see you jumping up and down with excitement right now!!  Andi’s talking about kitchen tools – woohoo!)

Seriously, though, I do love my mortar and pestle, and for a relatively small investment it can dramatically change the flavour of your cooking.

Check it out:

Not bad for my first video, right?  (Humour me, ok?)

As well as spices you can also use a mortar and pestle to make pastes from fresh herbs (like pesto) without turning the leaves brown, pounding garlic, or breaking up nuts into small pieces.  I’ve also found that I’m not alone in my love of the stone over ceramic,  many chefs agree that the weight and roughness of the stone makes for the best pounding and grinding action.

And this tool has certainly stood the test of time.  There are apparently references to its use in Egypt in 1550 B.C.  I wonder if the food processor will make it that long…..

What’s your favourite cooking tool?

I love mortar and pestals. I think if I had lots of money and more importantly space I would own several of them!!! I agree with your assessment of stone over other materials.

And, excellent video :) It was great to hear your voice :)

Now I have a voice to go with all the great emails we have sent each other back and forth:) Great video!!

I’m impressed with your video, Andrea! Unfortunately, since I live alone, I often lose motivation to cook for myself. I haven’t done any cooking since my friend Erica stayed with me for the first week of January… I want to get back into cooking and start experimenting with recipes from my collection of vegetarian cookbooks.

I liked hearing your voice! I miss our long-distance phone calls.

By the way, how did you make your video? Did you use the video feature on your camera? How did you get the sound to work properly? How did you upload it onto youtube? How did you set up a youtube account? Thanks in advance for answering my questions. Maybe someday I’ll follow your lead and include a video post on my blog, too.

Hi Jennie, Making a video is pretty simple – I used my camera’s video setting, I downloaded it to my computer in the same way I download photos, then I downloaded it onto youtube. I was worried about sound quality too because I just have this simple little camera, but it worked perfectly. Creating a youtube account is easy too – just click on “create an account” and follow the directions. Once you have an account, youyube makes it very simple to download a video and then post it to your blog. Have fun!
